Borneo Modern Penan Culture

Lovely Penan Ladies

Penan Beauties

Beginning of the new century of the year 2000, all of the Penan people of Borneo finally gave up their nomadic culture and are eager to accept modernization.
They are the last tribe to get out of nomadic jungle living as gatherers and hunters.

A Penan Longhouse

Dayak Penan is a subgroup of Dayak Punan Bah and is classified as Orang Ulu in Sarawak.
Most of them are found in Upper Baram, Limbang and Belaga areas.
They began to settle and live in longhouses in 1950s and learned to do farming and agriculture.

Processing sago

Eventhough they are no longer nomadic, the Penan people still go into the forest to collect jungle produces such as the palm flour they call sago.

Simple hut to stay nights in jungle

Occasionally they spend a few weeks in the jungle to look for valuable produces such as resins, birdnests, rattans, honey and so on.

They are expert in making their famous traditional weapon called sumpit - a blowpipe.

Lacing dart tips with lethal latex of a tree

They use darts made from palm branches with metal tips laced with lethally poisonous latex of a tree.

Good prices of wild huntings

They are surely very good in wild hunting with the blowpipes.
Even a small injury caused by those darts would kill the target.
